Lesson

Spectrum of Idols: Color Bar Portraits

Big Idea: Idols, Idolization

Grade Level: Art Fundamentals (9-12)

Objectives:

SWBAT discuss idolization and reflect on their personal idols
SWBAT analyze portraiture created by both contemporary and historic artists
SWBAT investigate meaning making through abstract color use
SWBAT explore professional practices, including color theory

SWBAT reflect on the importance of idols and the concept of idolization

Lesson Summary:

Students will examine and explore their idols and the concept of idolization by examining portraiture where the artist uses abstract color to portray their idols and by practicing and applying color theory.

In this lesson, the big idea students will examine is idols. Students will explore what an idol is, reflect on who their personal idols are and why they idolize them, examine the concept of idolization, and discover the importance of personal idols. It is important that students explore the big idea idols because every person has personal idols who serve as a guide for their own personal behaviors. By taking a deeper and more critical look at their idols, students will be able to better understand the impact of idols, what healthy idolization is, and the difference between positive and negative idols. Students will be able to relate their idol-related inquiry and artmaking to the portraiture of artists that depict their own idols.
